Tesla Model S fleet is about to end range anxiety for their EVs via a simple software update, according to a tweet from Elon Musk early Sunday morning.
“Tesla press conf at 9am on Thurs. About to end range anxiety … via OTA software update. Affects entire Model S fleet.”
It is starting to become typical Elon style to prime the media before a big announcement via a tweet.
Some Reference information on Tesla EV Range: The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) current official range for the Model S Performance model equipped with an 85 kWh battery pack is 265 miles (426 km).
The previous BEV range record holder was the Tesla Roadster.
I originally suspected that Tesla engineers have decided it was safe to allow the Tesla Model S battery pack to use more or the available battery so that it could be drained to lower levels without being degraded over time. However, the net result of this Over-the-air programming (OTA) software patch instead of increasing the range of the Model S by a significant margin, uploaded two significant software Apps instead.
The Range Assurance Application now actively manages the range of the Model S very accurately and calculates that range based on changes in elevation, windspeed and weather and other factors. EV range information is then paired with active monitoring of the Tesla Charging Network and SuperCharger network with the Trip Planner App that will determine the fastest travel time to destination by knowing the estimated number of users requiring charging at any given Tesla charging station and will also provide the EV driver with how long to stop and charge at each location.
According to Tesla these apps makes it effectively impossible for a Model S driver to run out of charge unintentionally.
