Range Anxiety is now more of an issue for some Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles powered by traditional Fossil Fuels than for some EVs.
According to Chevrolet “Chevy Volt owners that charge regularly are averaging 900 miles between fill-ups” with the help of a range-extending Auxiliary Power Unit (APU).
Also the Tesla Model S with the largest battery pack will supply 300 miles of range at 55 MPH, which is already much farther than many Fossil Fuel powered vehicles.
“Some EVs are giving Fossil Fuel powered cars Range Anxiety”
Here’s just a quick incomplete list to make the point (feel free to add your own additions in the comment section):
2014 Honda Civic GX (240 miles using natural gas)
2014 Dodge Charger (292 miles)
2013 Buick LaCrosse (239 using E85 fuel)
2014 Chrysler 300 (292 miles)
2013 Buick Regal (275 miles using E85 fuel)
2013 Toyota Tundra (261 miles using E85 fuel)
2013 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (248 miles)
2013 BMW 135i (265 miles)
2013 Ford Mustang (274 miles)
2013 SRT Viper (216 miles)
2013 Bentley Continental GTC (238 miles using E85 fuel)
2014 Mercedes-Benz G550 (297 miles)
2013 Nissan Armada (277 miles using E85 fuel)
2014 Toyota Sequoia (238 miles using E85 fuel)
2014 Cadillac Escalade (279 miles using E85 fuel)
2014 Ford Explorer (234 miles using E85 fuel)
Obviously there are many new fossil fuel powered vehicles that have more “range anxiety” than a Tesla Model S or Chevy Volt, and that list grows much larger if the vehicle is an older model and not subject to the new federal fuel economy standards.
Battery technology and performance is increasing exponentially (like Moore’s Law) rather than the small incremental increases in MPG we are seeing in the mature ICE industry. Such a situation all but ensures that the Big Range Anxiety Reversal will continue to favor EVs even more as time progresses.
